Tickets are still available for Friday’s Rockin’ for a Reason concert on the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville’s Independence Hall.
Danny Dozier and The Lockhouse Orchestra will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. and play for about two hours. All proceeds will go toward construction of the new nursing and allied health building. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance Citizens Bank, First Community Bank, the Batesville Daily Guard and UACCB or by calling (870) 612-2017. -
City may amend claims policy, vacate part of subdivision
The Batesville City Council will meet tonight at 5:30 at city hall. The agenda includes an ordinance to amend the water/sewer damage claims policy, an ordinance to grant a partial vacation of the Mountain Ridge Subdivision, a report from Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson and comments from Mayor Rick Elumbaugh.
The council will hear a budget request from the airport commission and a presentation from the chamber of commerce, recognize the Eagle Mountain Archery Team and consider a water meter outside city limits at 275 White Drive. -
Weatherman installed
Dr. Donald V. Weatherman was installed as Lyon College’s 17th president Saturday afternoon in an inauguration ceremony held in Couch Garden.
Under bright sunshine and blue skies, Raymond A. LaCroix Jr., chairman of the Board of Trustees, read the charge from the board and then, assisted by Frank Lyon Jr., trustee and chairman of the presidential search committee, presented the presidential medallion to Weatherman as a symbol of his investiture. -
Sisters had humor, wit
During Saturday’s announcement of a major gift to Old Independence Regional Museum from the Kathleen Barnes and Fonteen Simmons Trust Fund, Nelson Barnett, who knew the sisters well, gave some insight into their personalities and character.
“Fonteen worked about 40 years at the store (Barnett Brothers Department Store). She was a good teacher and a fun person,” he said. “She was a good person to listen to people.” -

Pioneers find winning beat in Blytheville
BLYTHEVILLE — We will see if they can keep the rhythm, but the Batesville Pioneers found a winning beat in the second half here Friday night.
After a strange and sudden twist left them down 7-6 at halftime, the Pioneers rallied twice to post a 21-13 high school football victory over the Blytheville Chickasaws.
Batesville Coach Dave King anticipated the question and answered before it was asked: “That was not just the best half of football we’ve played this season, it’s the best we’ve played in a long time.” -

Jhessica Martins knocked down a game-high 19 kills and teammate Ann-Katherine Kuehorn blasted 13 more in Martin Methodist’s 3-1 defeat of the Lyon College Pipers Friday night in a TranSouth Athletic Conference match on homecoming at Becknell Gymnasium.
Martin Methodist won 19-25, 25-23, 25-13 and 25-22. The Pipers (9-19 overall, 3-5 TranSouth) have lost five straight and dropped their last two conference games. Martin Methodist (13-11, 4-8) broke a 2-game slide against Lyon College and halted a 3-game losing streak overall. -
Mens soccer
Stephen Dallas, Sean O’Toole and Gabriel LeBlanc scored two goals apiece and the Lyon College Scots tied a school record for goals in a 10-0 shutout victory over Rust College on Saturday during Homecoming at Huser Field.
The Scots (8-4-0) snapped a 2-game losing streak with the triumph and shut out an opponent for the fifth time this season. Lyon’s 10-goal output equaled the school record originally set on Oct. 3, 2006 in a 10-2 road win over Williams Baptist College. -
Augusta 47, Cedar Ridge 18
AUGUSTA — The Red Devils jumped to a 40-6 halftime lead while winning this 2A-3 District contest
Ishma Clark scored on a 68-yard punt return in the first quarter and the junior running back also totaled 101 yards on eight carries. One of those was for 44 yards and a TD.
Sophomore quarterback Cordell Turner threw two TD passes and ran for two TDs. Both TD passes were to senior Matt Bowen. On defense, sophomore Henry Poindexter returned a pass interception for 70 yards and a TD. -
Heber Springs 55, Southside 0
HEBER SPRINGS — The mercy clock began running with the start of the third quarter after the Panthers rolled to a 40-0 halftime lead in this 4A-2 District contest.
Braylon Mitchell, a University of Arkansas recruit, scored four TDs while gathering 66 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Wes McMullen completed seven of 10 passes for 163 yards and two TDs. Hunter Derrick and Geoffrey Anderson had the TD receptions.
The Panthers improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the district standings. The Southerners fell to 0-5 and 0-7. -
Pretty performance helps Hornets get by Cavemen
HARRISBURG — Harrisburg running back Zach Pretty and the rest of the Harrisburg Hornets exploited the Cave City Cavemen’s weaknesses en route to a 26-7, high school football victory here Friday night.
It is the only loss of the season for the Cavemen, who fall to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Class 3A-3 District. Harrisburg has the same records. Three other teams have the same district mark and one will be left out when the playoff tickets are handed out in two weeks.
Hoxie, Earle and Rivercrest are the other teams vying for a spot. The first two remain on Cave City’s schedule. -
