SEARCY — Virginia Kendrick, 79, of Searcy died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009.
Born Jan. 27, 1930, she was the daughter of Virgil S. and Lucy L. Smith. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Assembly of God and was an active member of the Women’s Ministry. -
J.L. Stroud
EVENING SHADE — John “J.L.” Stroud, 91, of Evening Shade died today, Aug. 4, 2009, in a Cave City nursing home.
Born March 19, 1918, at Evening Shade, he was the son of Arthur and Mary Francis Dial Stroud. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired farmer, worked at the Evening Shade Feed Mill, was a substitute mail carrier and worked at J.K. Southerland Poultry Processing Company in Batesville. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Zion. -
Auto theft, break-ins reported
Police are looking for a suspect in the theft of one vehicle and the break-in of two others, according to reports submitted with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office.
Will Floyd of Newark reported his 2004 gold Hyundai Sante Fe stolen sometime between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 6:20 a.m. Thursday.
Floyd told Deputy Michael Darr that the SUV was parked in his driveway on 10th Street when it came up missing, and was not sure if it was locked or not. Darr said there was no broken glass on the ground where the vehicle had been parked. -
Two arrested over weekend
Two men were arrested in separate weekend incidents involving driving, drugs or alcohol violations, according to local authorities.
Independence County Deputy Nathan Stephens was dispatched to the area of Ventura Lane around 4:40 Friday afternoon when a caller reported a man slumped over inside a truck. -
Meekses celebrate golden anniversary
HIGDEN — The Rev. Melvin E. and Dorothy Maxine Meeks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at 5 p.m. Saturday at Western Sizzlin in Batesville.
Dorothy Maxine Tackett and Melvin E. Meeks were married Aug. 8, 1959, at United Pentecostal Church in Delphi, Ind., by Ronald Ratcliff.
They have two sons, Billy Meeks and his wife, Jannette, of Floral and Perry Meeks and his wife, Wendy, of Marcella; and a daughter, Rhonda Wilson and her husband, Darrell, of Gulfport, Miss. -

John Drymon to lead St. Paul’s
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Rector Search Committee & Vestry has announced that John Drymon assumed the role of deacon-in-charge of the Parish starting June 1.
A native Arkansan, Drymon graduated from The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, New York, N.Y. with his master of divinity in May. He did his undergraduate study at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. on a full academic scholarship. Drymon was placed on the clergy fast track and received early ordination into the Arkansas Diaconate on March 21. -
Cabot man dies in crash of ATV near Norfork
MOUNTAIN HOME (AP) — A 32-year-old man from Cabot is dead after crashing an all-terrain vehicle as he sought a stronger cell-phone signal from the top of a hill, the Baxter County sheriff’s office says.
A news release from the sheriff’s office identified the victim of the accident early Saturday afternoon as Michael Millican. -
Library to be closed
The Independence County Library in downtown Batesville will be closed Aug. 10-11 for staff training in preparation for the library’s automation project, according to a news release.

Adults with Down Syndrome to get clinic
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Adult Arkansans with Down Syndrome will have a place to get medical care and advice starting today.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences announced Monday that the UAMS Genetics Clinic would open today near the UAMS campus.
“Because of advancements in medicine, many patients have outlived and outgrown pediatric genetics services,” the school said in a news release. “Until now, Arkansas didn’t have a resource dedicated to specialty care for adult patients.” -
Fish dinner to be served
HUTCHINSON MOUNTAIN — Hutchinson Mountain Community Center will have its fish fry and chicken dinner from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The center is at 3370 Camp Tahkodah Road.
Prices are $8 per adults, $4 for children 11 and under. Drinks and dessert are included in the all-you-can-eat buffet. -
Three Izard County inmates transported to prison
MELBOURNE — Three Izard County inmates who were awaiting bed space in the Arkansas Department of Correction were transported to prison on Thursday.
Roy Stroud, 72, of Batesville will serve time for sex-related crimes. Paul David Beaver, 25, of Horseshoe Bend was sentenced under a parole revocation associated with breaking and entering along with theft of property. Donnie Ray Woodcock, 28, of Calico Rock was sent to prison on a parole violation.
