C-Ridge board to meet
NEWARK — The Cedar Ridge School Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the central office board room.
The agenda includes second readings of policy proposals and preschool handbooks, discussion of when to hold an annual report to the public, adult meal prices, adoption of personnel policies and salary schedules and the sale of used school buses.
The central office is located at 1502 N. Hill St. in Newark -
Girl dies in ATV crash
ASH FLAT — A 12-year-old Bradford girl died in Sharp County on Thursday as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident, Sheriff Dale Weaver said.
“It was a terrible, terrible thing,” he said. -
KVMN nominated for ‘station of year’
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — KVMN, Cave City School’s educational radio station, is among 10 nominees for Radio Station of the Year in the 15th annual Inspirational Country Music Awards show to be held Oct. 15 at Trinity Music City USA Auditorium in Hendersonville, Tenn., according to a press release from Power Source Music Group.

Hospitals picked for trauma care
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The Arkansas Trauma Advisory Council has approved 68 hospitals that applied to become trauma centers.
The approval allows the state Health Department to start the process of getting legislative approval for startup grants for the hospitals. The first grants are expected in November and will range from $25,000 to $500,000 depending on the level of the trauma center being created.
The levels range from Level I to Level IV with Level I centers providing the highest level of care. -
Record class to arrive at Lyon
Nearly 300 new students will descend on the Lyon College campus Thursday for “Tartan Transitions,” a five-day orientation program to welcome new students, prepare them for life at Lyon and help them get to know the campus and its faculty, staff and other students.
The class of 2013 is a record class for Lyon, consisting of more than 215 freshmen. There are also more than 70 new transfer students set to begin classes. -
Southside excited
SOUTHSIDE — A new year, a new set of faces, a new classroom and a new building.
There’s a lot for Southside first-grade teacher Karen Davis to be excited about when school starts next Wednesday.
On Thursday afternoon, however, there was still a lot left to do as she and other teachers at Southside worked to get their new classrooms ready for the beginning of a busy year inside the district’s new $8.7 million, 600-student K-4 elementary building. -

Eagles gamble on disgraced Michael Vick
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick is back in the NFL. When he finally gets in a game, it might be at a new position.
Looking to add a new dimension to their offense, the Philadelphia Eagles gave Vick a one-year deal with an option for a second year.
Vick wasn’t brought in to compete with 5-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb for a starting job, but the two could end up on the field together. -
BHS golfers fall in Mtn. Home
MOUNTAIN HOME — Mountain Home swept Batesville in dual golf matches Thursday at Big Creek Golf and Country Club.
Mountain Home won the boys match 316-373, but Garth Branstetter shined for the Pioneers. Branstetter sank five birdies and finished with a 1-under-par 71. That was three strokes better than the Bombers’ Seth Sullivan.
Batesville’s team score was completed by Shayne Vanbenschoten’s 84, Laman Fountain’s 102 and Spencer Barnes’ 116. -
Registration for grade-school gridders continues
Registration for the Kiwanis Youth Football League is continuing this month, announced Lyndal Waits.
Boys and girls entering grades 3 through 6 can register each Saturday in August, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Game Day Sports, 1280 North St. Louis Street.
The entry fee is $70 and the child needs to be present for measurements. Helmet and shoulder pads will be issued at the registration. All entry forms are available at http://www.batesvillekiwanis.org/football.htm. -
Newport wins match at city course
Trey Winemiller shot a 49 for nine holes and led the Newport Greyhounds to a triangular high school golf victory Wednesday at the Batesville Municipal Golf Course.
Derek Bright and Matt Hardin added 55s to give the Greyhounds a team total of 159.
The Cedar Ridge Timberwolves finished 14 strokes back. Southside’s junior varsity team finished another seven strokes back.

Mallinger, Allenby lead PGA after first turn
CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — So much for all that talk about mighty and monstrous Hazeltine National.
Paul Goydos, Robert Allenby, Camilo Villegas, Dustin Johnson were the early leaders at the PGA Championship this morning at 3-under-par, with Tiger Woods a stroke behind. Defending champion Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and Tom Lehman were part of the pack at 1 under.
