Stamp show announced
MOUNTAIN HOME — The Mountain Home Area Stamp Club will sponsor the 32nd Annual Stamp and Picture Postcard Show and Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Ramada Inn, located at Highway 62B and Commerce Drive in Mountain Home.
Dealers from six states will be available to buy, sell and trade.
Included in the event will be U.S. postage stamps, foreign postage stamps, picture postcards, first day covers, flight and naval covers, foreign and topical covers, stamp collections and accumulations, odd lots and stamp and postcard supplies. -
Desha reunion scheduled
DESHA — The Desha High School classes of 1950 and 1951 will have a reunion at 5 p.m. Saturday at Western Sizzlin in Batesville.
The group will also meet for breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Kelley-Wyatt’s Restaurant in Batesville.

Holocaust survivor to speak
POCAHONTAS — Black River Technical College will host Holocaust survivor Estelle (Wakszlak) Laughlin at the Randolph County Development Center in Pocahontas.
She will be speaking at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 21 and at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 22. The event is open to the public.

Laughlin was born in Warsaw, Poland, on July 9, 1929 to Michla and Samek Wakszlak. She now lives in the Washington, D.C. area and is a volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. -
Albert Sidney Johnston, UDC
The Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter #135, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held its August meeting at the Batesville Country Club. After a Dutch treat luncheon, the meeting was called to order by vice president Fran Haverstick in the absence of president Mary Miller.
Secretary Judy Baker read the minutes, and Patti Emmons gave the treasurer’s report. Dues for the 2009-10 year are now payable. -
Edleys to mark anniversary
CHARLOTTE — Robert and Evelyn Edley of Charlotte will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday.
Robert Edley and Evelyn Rutledge were married by the Rev. J.W. Collard at his home in Newark on Sept. 5, 1959.
They have a son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Denise Edley of Charlotte.
No local celebration will be held. A trip to Missouri is planned. -
Gage Dawson Willis
Shaun and Stephannie Willis, Brianna, Brayden and Gavin of Batesville have announced the birth of a son and brother at White River Medical Center on Aug. 29, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 12.3 ounces and has been named Gage Dawson Willis.
Grandparents of the child are Steve and MaryEllen Wood of Batesville and Billy and Tonie Norris of Cave City. -

Timothy Bryson Mohlke and Sydney Lauren Clayton of Batesville have announced the birth of a daughter at White River Medical Center on Aug. 20, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces and has been named Kaylyn Lauren Mohlke.
Grandparents of the child are Johnny and Jessica Brightwell of Cave City, Frankie and Penny Clayton and Donald and Mashelle Finster, all of Batesville, and Darrel Mohlke of Searcy. -

Chris and Cheyennee McBride of Batesville have announced the birth of a daughter at White River Medical Center on Aug. 27, 2009. The baby weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces and has been named Jordyn Elizibeth McBride.
Grandparents of the child are Sheri McBride, Johnny McBride, Gary and Shannon Hambley and Noel and Sherry Seeley.
Great-grandparents are Virginia Smith and Nelly Gaddy. -
Payton Lily Faulkner
Brandon Faulkner and Mara Jones of Harrisburg have announced the birth of a daughter at White River Medical Center on Aug. 28, 2009. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 7.5 ounces and has been named Payton Lily Faulkner.
Grandparents of the child are Randy Faulkner and Katey Jones Vasarhely. -
End of Camelot
I wasn’t a child or an adult in the 1960s, but I grew up knowing about the Kennedys thanks to some old LIFE magazines I bought in the ’90s.
Reading through articles about John F. Kennedy’s death in Dallas, looking at photographs of his funeral, reading about his and Jackie’s life together, intrigued me.
They were like Britain’s royal family only they lived in the United States and called Hyannis Port off the coast of Massachusetts, home. -
Johnson candidacy a threat
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Bob Johnson’s flirtation with a bid for the United States Senate is a chancy move for a lawmaker who contends he’s not well known beyond his legislative district.
It’s also another threat that U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln doesn’t need as she seeks a third term in office.
The Arkansas Senate president’s announcement that he’s considering challenging Lincoln in next year’s Democratic primary is the latest surprise move from a state legislator who has made unpredictability one of his hallmarks. -
Melbourne board meets tonight
MELBOURNE —The Melbourne School board will meet at 7 tonight in the administration building.
Included on the agenda are teacher raises, resignations and employments and a vocational program update.
