Mary Benegar
FORT SMITH — Mary V. Benegar, 93, of Fort Smith died today, Aug. 20, 2009, in Fort Smith.
Born Feb. 16, 1916, in Cave City, she was the daughter of Matthew and Bertha Woodyard Phillips. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Smith.
Survivors include a sister, Flossie Gossett of Fort Smith; and a nephew, Philip Brewer of Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie S. Benegar; two brothers; and three sisters. -
Jimmy Henry
FLORAL — James William “Jimmy” Henry, 36, of Floral died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at his home.
Born April 27, 1973, in Hot Springs, he was the son of Willard and Nancy Henry.
Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Ann Henry; his mother of Batesville; a daughter, Lori Steele of Floral; three sisters, Donna Reynolds, Deanna Zahn and Dawana Blake, all of Batesville; and three grandchildren, Trystyn DeFino, Alexander Foster and Lillieann Foster, all of Floral. -
Clark wins title
Olivia Paige Clark recently won the title of 2009 Young Miss Melon in the pageants associated with the Cave City Watermelon Festival. Her picture was not submitted with the other winners at the time the pictures were published in the Batesville Daily Guard.

Woman accepted to pharmacy school
SEARCY — Lynnsey Simpson of Jonesboro is one of 60 new students accepted to Harding University’s College of Pharmacy for the fall 2009 semester. Simpson will be welcomed to the campus pharmacy communityFriday in a white coat ceremony where the class will take the pledge of professionalism.

Melbourne — Levi McCurley, who graduated in May from Melbourne High School, has been selected to receive the Academic Excellence Scholarship to attend Ozarka College this semester, according to a news release.

Timothy Owens, Joyce Sims and Ottis Wooldridge, all of Batesville, have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Talisha Owens, to NyJel Strickland, son of Cornelius Strickland of Searcy and Ercenia Strickland-Lewis of Batesville.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Annie Dixon of Batesville. -

SMACKOVER — A traveling exhibit is putting Smackover on the map.
“GPS Adventures Arkansas,” which will be at the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources until Dec. 30, introduces visitors to GPS (Global Positioning System) technology while also serving as a cache for geocachers. -

What was this menace thinking?
The small Associated Press story that came across the wire late last week was about a judge in Illinois dismissing a lawsuit filed against an Illinois state trooper by an Arkansas couple injured in a freeway wreck, ruling that Trooper Matt Mitchell has immunity from such lawsuits because of his job.

ASH FLAT — Strawberry River Road east from the Game and Fish Commission boat ramp to the Lawrence County line will be closed until further notice, due to road construction, Sharp County Judge Larry Brown announced Wednesday.

Early notification sign-up to be Saturday at Oil Trough
OIL TROUGH — Residents of the Oil Trough Fire District may sign up for the Alert Express All Hazards early notification system between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oil Trough Community Center, Fire Chief John Long said.
The service is free, but recipients must sign up, giving the name of the fire district they live in along with their names, addresses and up to two phone numbers (landline or cell) they wish to be called on.
The first number listed will be the primary number. -
Telestials to perform locally
CAVE CITY — The Telestials, a longtime gospel singing group, will perform Saturday at the Cave City Park, said Billy Snow, a member of Crystal River Bluegrass, which will open the show.
The free concert starts at 7 p.m. Those attending should bring lawn chairs.
The group was established in 1963 with a trio of women calling themselves the Harmony Trio, singing at church functions. In 1966 the group recorded its first album in Atlanta, followed by the name change and the addition of male vocalists.
