ASU-Va. Tech to play football in 2011
JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State will play Virginia Tech in football in 2011.
The Hokies will host the Red Wolves on Sept. 17, Arkansas State announced Wednesday.
ASU Athletic Director Dean Lee said the school signed a $1 million contract to play Virginia Tech.
The teams last played in 2002, when the Hokies beat Arkansas State 63-7 in Steve Roberts’ first game as ASU’s coach. -
9 UCA Bears picked first team all-league
CONWAY (AP) — Defensive end Larry Hart is one of nine Central Arkansas players on the preseason All-Southland Conference first team, which was announced Wednesday.
Hart, the league’s defensive player of the year in 2008, was joined on the first team by teammates: Nick Cowger, junior fullback; Lane Freiwald, senior offensive lineman; Will Merritt, senior offensive linemen; Taylor Scott, senior defensive lineman; James Lancaster, senior linebacker; Derrick Boyd, senior defensive back; Pieri Feazell, senior defensive back; and Anthony Gambles, senior defensive back. -
19th Putt-N-Putt tournament finishes with father-son rarity
Despite the threat of rain, the 19th Annual Putt-N-Putt Tournament was played Wednesday night and there were a couple of firsts.
On the male side of the competition, a father-son trio made history. Kirk Shaw won the mens division and his son Kyler Shaw won the boys division. Clay Shaw and son Kevin Shaw each took second in their respective divisions and Kim Looney and Jack Looney each finished third.
Kirk Shaw shot a 6-over par 114. Kevin Shaw was a stroke behind and Kim Looney carded a 118. -

Piper soccer coach takes job at UALR
Chris McNaughton is climbing the career ladder. The former Lyon College Pipers soccer coach accepted an assistant coaching job with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, the school announced Wednesday.
McNaughton was the head coach for the Pipers for the last three seasons and helped turn the program around. He posted a 34-19-3 record with the Pipers. The program was 8-39-0 prior to his reign. -
Pioneer football players face first tests Saturday
The Batesville Pioneer football prospects will get together at 6:59 a.m. Saturday morning in Pioneer Stadium for their annual first day of tests.
Thirty-four days later, Thursday night, Sept. 3, they will meet the Newport Greyhounds in the same stadium for a season-opening football game.
That meeting is part of a historic happening. It is the second of 11 Arkansas high school games set for live telecast on KARZ, Channel MY 42, a sister station of KARK (Channel 4) in Little Rock. The first will happen Sept. 1, the Jacksonville-at-Cabot game. -

Princeton Review names Lyon to list of ‘Best Southeastern Colleges’
The Princeton Review has again named Lyon College a “Best Southeastern College,” based on results from its “2010 Best Colleges” survey, a distinction Lyon has earned for the past six consecutive years.
Lyon College is one of 141 schools receiving the Best in the Southeast designation, and one of only four Arkansas institutions on the list.
The others are Harding University, Hendrix College and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. -
Church to observe anniversary
New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located on Highway 106 northwest of Batesville, will observe its 157th anniversary and homecoming celebration Sunday.
Billy Brooks will conduct the morning worship services at 11 a.m. A potluck will be served at noon and special singing will begin at 1 p.m.
The church had its beginning in 1852 when members of Greenbriar Church, north of White River, decided to organize their own church, according to a news release. -
J.D. Wright
CALICO ROCK — John Douglas “J.D.” Wright, 85, of Calico Rock died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, in Houma, La.
Born April 29, 1924, in Locust Grove, Okla., he was the son of Shady Lee Wright and Maude Holman Wright.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on Okinawa, Japan, and was a Purple Heart recipient for wounds received in action. -
Jack Neal
Phillip “Jack” Neal, 65, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, in Newport.
Born Sept. 25, 1943, in Moultrie, Ga., he was the son of Phillip and Ruby Neal. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served 26 years as a manpower management superintendent. He held a bachelor of arts in mathematics from the State University of New York.
Survivors include a son, Todd Neal; a daughter, Lisa Neal; a brother, Phillip T. Neal; and a granddaughter, Becky Neal.
