Weighing in for jobs
There’s been some debate in the media about whether or not Surgeon General nominee Regina Benjamin is too overweight for the position. On behalf of chubby, middle-aged, smart women, I feel obligated to take up this cause.
I’d like to know, which jobs do you need to be skinny for? And when is it OK to bring a little extra girth into the office?
Personally, I think Dr Benjamin looks fine. Sure, she’s no Kate Moss, but C. Everett Koop was no Slim Jim either. -
Words of wisdom
A couple of weeks ago, a Lyon alumna brought up the topics of intelligence and wisdom. She asked, first, if they were the same or different; second, if they were gifts or could be acquired; and, third, if a person could be wise if he separates himself from God. Meaty questions, no? Let’s think about them.
Are intelligence and wisdom the same or different? -
Juanita Griffin
CONWAY — Juanita Bernice Hanagan Griffin, 93, of Conway died today, July 31, 2009, in Conway.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Roller-Crouch-McGee Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Sidney.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Coy King
MEANS, Ky. — Coy Manuel King, 79, of Means, Ky., died Thursday, July 30, 2009.
Born July 22, 1930, in Sharp County, he was the son of Russell Dewey King and Esther Leona West King. He was retired from Cessna Aircraft and A.O. Smith and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Rosetta King; two daughters, Sherry King of Muskogee, Okla., and Karen Brown of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lora Gay of Mineola, Texas, and Gracie McCrackin of Strawberry. -
Dub Wilbanks
WARREN — W.C. “Dub” Wilbanks, 86, died Thursday, July 30, 2009.
Born Nov. 27, 1922, in Fayetteville, he was the son of W.C. and Sibbie Wilbanks. He graduated from Batesville High School and attended the University of Arkansas and Louisiana State University. After serving four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, he began his career of 40 years with Arkansas Power & Light (now Entergy). He was an engineer with the company at Batesville, then worked in various positions throughout Arkansas, retiring as local manager in Warren. -
Duckie Pollard
TUCKERMAN — Jerry Hayden “Duckie” Pollard, 59, of the Tuckerman and Elgin area, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Jonesboro.
Born Sept. 26, 1949, in Newport, he was the son of Robert and Opal Pate Pollard. He worked for American Lantern for 20 years and for Wal-Mart Distribution Center for 13 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ. -
Minnie Richardson
NEWARK — Minnie Ethel Tharp Richardson, 100, of Newark died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Batesville.
She was born May 23, 1909. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Wade Tharp of Newark; five grandchildren, Stephen Lee Norris, Kenneth Ray Norris, Belinda Gail Sarne, Freddie McClain and Teresa Huff; and eight great-grandchildren. -
WRMC hosts MASH program for area students
White River Medical Center is one of 28 hospitals hosting the MASH (Medical Application of Science for Health) program this summer, according to a news release.
WRMC and sponsoring partners offer the two-week medical career camp for high school students interested in pursuing a health care career. During the program, students become Heart-saver CPR certified, complete first aid training and learn the importance of healthy and safe lifestyle choices. Lectures, lab and clinical instruction enforce the connection between basic sciences and medical diagnosis and treatment. -

Steve and Jessica Sutton of Mountain View have announced the birth of a daughter at White River Medical Center on July 27, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces and has been named Emma Eva Sutton.
Grandparents of the child are Larry and Wanda Sutton and Gary and Melissa Ellison. -
Jonathon James Sutterfield
Matthew and Tabatha Sutterfield of Dolph have announced the birth of a son at White River Medical Center on July 26, 2009. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces and has been named Jonathon James Sutterfield.
Grandparents of the child are Matthew Sutterfield and Shirly Sutterfield. -
Brandon Ian Jones
Jason and Autumn Jones of Batesville have announced the birth of a son at White River Medical Center on July 24, 2009. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 8.6 ounces and has been named Brandon Ian Jones.
Grandparents of the child are Tim and Margaret Harmon, Adam Harkey and Johnny and Carolyn Jones.
Great-grandparents are Jimmy and Joann Brashers, Norman and Willa Harkey, Jack and Anna Lee Swaim and the late Kennard and Willie Mae Jones. -
Jude Elton Jackson
Chris and Merinda Jackson and Penelope Belle of Melbourne have announced the birth of a son and brother at White River Medical Center on July 27, 2009. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and has been named Jude Elton Jackson.
Grandparents of the child are Naomi Roper, Fred and Karla Rush and Gary and Sharon Jackson.
Great-grandparents are John and Ruby Miller, Ella Rodgers and Mary Jackson.
