Couple returning home surprised to see Tahoe coming down road
Returning home around 9 p.m. Monday night, a Batesville couple was surprised to meet their 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe coming down the road toward them.
Roy Gillihan told police that he and his wife met the truck on Allen Road and didn’t recognize the driver, so they stopped the truck and called police.
Deputy Shawn Stephens said when he arrived Gillihan had the driver of the truck, Brent Ellison, 27, sitting in the road and was talking to him. -
Apartment entered; phone taken
MELBOURNE — A Melbourne man was arrested June 23 in connection with an incident at a housing complex in that town.
Shelby Joe Roddy, 18, is accused on entering an apartment and taking a cell phone. Sheriff Tate Lawrence said that Roddy is charged with residential burglary, a class B felony; and with theft of property, a class A misdemeanor.
District Judge David Miller set Roddy’s bond at $5,000. Roddy remains in jail. -
Free concert to kick off water carnival
A free community concert will be held July 31 at Riverside Park in conjunction with the White River Water Carnival.
Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. with the White River’s Got Talent finalist competition. Ten finalists, who were selected from preliminary auditions, will compete for prize money that has been provided courtesy of First Community Bank and Bad Boy Inc. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, second-place $500 and third-place $250.
At 7:30 Jericho Crossing, a contemporary country and Christian band, will take the stage. -
Award given
BEREA, Ky. — A woman with Batesville ties has received an Appalachian Sound Archives Fellowship at Berea College.
Meredith Doster Edgerton is a student in the master’s degree program of Appalachian studies at Appalachian State University. She is also a fourth-generation shape-note singer. The fellowship will allow her to incorporate extensive archival research into her master’s thesis on the study of music in two Independent Baptist Churches in Watauga County. -
Authorities to launch river safety efforts
With higher gas prices keeping families closer to home, the sand bars along the White River near Batesville have become a favorite for more and more people looking for a place to beat the summer heat.
Local officials say they are pleased that more families are using the resources of the river and spending their money closer to home, and they plan to work together to make safety a priority. -

Harmon wins ASGA title at Red Apple Inn course
HEBER SPRINGS — Izard County’s Rachel Harmon won the Arkansas State Golf Association’s Greers Ferry Lake Junior Invitational at Red Apple Inn Country Club on Friday, according to a news release from the Izard County High School.
Harmon shot a 2-day total of 158 with a pair of 79s. Katie Webb of Shirley was second with a 75-85—160. Paige Dutton was third with an 85-84—169.
Webb is the current points leader for the ASGA Girls Player of the Year. -
Bankers’ season ends unpleasantly
WEST MEMPHIS — The baseball season ended here this weekend for one Batesville American Legion team, and it wasn’t a pleasant ending.
After sharing the Zone 2, 1A regular-season championship, top-seeded Citizens Bank was eliminated in three games of the zone tournament. The Bankers defeated Searcy B&B Oil 9-4 in the second round on Friday, then fell to Jonesboro Sports Academy Seams 15-13 on Saturday and were eliminated by Paragould RC Cola 14-2 in a run-ruled contest Sunday. -
Hughes shines for East; West completes sweep
BENTONVILLE — Batesville’s Tim Hughes provided the bulk of the excitement for the East squad here Friday night in a 29-6 loss to the West in the Arkansas High School Coaches Activities Association All-Star Classic football game.
Hughes, who had to wait until the second quarter before making his debut, was worth the wait as he ran 83 yards early in the period. Hughes found a hole on the right side, and worked his way through the secondary, stiff-arming and slipping tackles right and left before being hauled down by Jordan Shelby (Charleston) inside the 10-yard line. -
Brooks family races to front at Locust Grove
LOCUST GROVE — It was a father-and-son Friday at the Batesville Motor Speedway.
Terry Brooks won the factory stock feature. Jesse Brooks, Terry’s 21-year-old son, won the front wheel drive feature.
Actually, it was a good night all the way around for Brooks family members in front wheel drive racers. Tim, the nephew of Terry, finished third and Tony, Terry’s brother, placed fourth.
The other feature winners were: Peyton Taylor, modified; Jason Wilkey, NeSmith late model; Adam Maple, economy modified; and Richie Tosh, street stock. -
