Ruby Jenkins
Ruby Holley Jenkins, 79, of Batesville died Saturday, June 13, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
She lived in Greenville, Miss., until moving to Arkansas in April 2008. She retired as cafeteria manager for Greenville Public Schools. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Mark Jenkins of Batesville; a brother, Jim Holley of Joshua, Texas; two sisters, Grace Mills of Carthage, Miss., and Nita Threadgill of Memphis; and three grandchildren, Kyleigh Jenkins, Kelsie Jenkins and Hunter Jenkins. -
Walter James
HIGGINSON — Walter Loran James, 86, of Higginson died Saturday, June 13, 2009.
Born Jan. 28, 1923, he was the son of Ottis E. and Effie Mae Rice James. He was a member of Dogwood Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Lewis of Higginson and Karen Bowen of Bradford; a brother, Owen James of Higginson; four grandchildren, DeWayne Lewis, Shelley Pike, Marty Bowen and Marcy Kueffner; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Pike, Austin Pike, Miles Kueffner and Cy Kueffner; and several nephews and nieces. -

San Antonio — Army Reserve Pvt. Caleb E. Goodman has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. -
Cousins & Friends Reunion will be only one day this year
WIRTH — The 22nd annual Cousins & Friends Reunion will be one day instead of the usual two days this year, said Boyd Estes of Wirth, who helps organize the event.
“The reunion was created by Coach Orwell Moore, owner and coach of the world-famous All American Red Heads,” Estes said.
Moore, of Caraway, died May 19. He was 91.
“All descendants and friends of the Moore, Estes, Short, Duke, Manry, Orr, Coggins, McCord, Godwin, Martin and Kent families are invited,” Estes said. -
Beard, Herrin plan to solemnize vows
CAVE CITY — Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Beard of Cave City have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Candice Michelle Beard, to Philip Patrick Herrin, son of Daniel and Laneca Herrin of Cushman.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Huff of Batesville and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Beard of Cave City.
She is a 2007 graduate of Cave City High School.
The prospective groom is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fonce Phillips Jr. of Pleasant Plains and Carol Herrin of Cushman.
He is a 2004 graduate of Cushman High School. -
Johnson, Weston set to unite in marriage
MOUNT PLEASANT — Leann Johnson of Mount Pleasant and Blane Johnson of Calico Rock have announced the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Lacey Johnson, to Anthony Weston, son of Mark and Tunene Weston of Harrisburg.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Delmas and Betty Johnson of Melbourne and the late R.G. and Peggy Foreman of Franklin. -

Aunt Anj strikes again
I already know I’m a bad sister. I mean, my own grandmother tells me that much, and when your grandmother tells you, it’s gotta be true.
But, I am a great aunt.
Just ask my niece Abby.
A few days aftershe and her brother Avery were out for the summer, they came to Batesville. I met their mom at Brockwell to pick up the kids, telling Abby about my friend’s kittens, which as luck would have it, were ready to leave the nest, so to speak. Abby was already broiling over with excitement, even though Avery was trying to quash it. -
