Donkey, mule races planned to mark Independence Day
Mountain View — Honoring the spirit of independence, the Ozark Folk Center is hosting several donkey and mule competitions on July 4.
Competitions start at 9 a.m. Handlers can walk the courses beginning at 8. Any long-eared equine and their human companion can participate.
The morning will start with a mail trail course.
“Mail trails wind through the Ozarks and were a vital link from one community to another,” according to a news release. -
10.25 lbs. wins event
CAVE CITY — Roger Brown and David Diemer won Saturday’s Cave City Bass Tournament on Crown Lake in Horseshoe Bend with a stringer weighing 10.25 pounds, tournament director Ron Watkins said.
Thirty-six anglers participated in 19 boats.
Chad Tracy and Sharh Tracy placed second with 7.85 pounds. Keith Lawrence and Danny Matthews came in third with 6.95 pounds.
Clark Neal weighed in the biggest bass, a 4.75-pounder.
The next tournament will be from 6 p.m. June 27 to 1 a.m. the following day, on Greers Ferry Lake out of the Old Hwy. 25 Ramp. -
Snakes present outdoors photo challenge
I love to shoot snakes.
They can be unpredictable in their movements and depending on their current state of mind just before I fire off a shot, they can be aggressive enough to get closer to me than I prefer.
Whoa! Let me clarify something here. I’m talking about shooting them with a camera. I quit shooting them with guns a long time ago; besides, that’s against the law nowadays. -

PLEASANT GROVE — Junior L. “Bob” Copeland, 77, of Pleasant Grove died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Willis Funeral Service Chapel in Batesville with G.C. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Cox, Brian Cox, Tom Martin, Chester King, Gary York, Rocky Don Sutton, Jerry York and Howard Davis.
Honorary pallbearers are Erwin York, Sam Hall and Skinny Blair.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight. -
Edwin Ellison
Edwin B. Ellison, 80, of Batesville died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roller-Crouch Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Karen Everetts
Karen Everetts, 56, of Batesville died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1952, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of Fred Hardke and Shirley Kellar Hardke Stanley. She was retired from White River Medical Center, where she was a nurse. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carlisle. -
Magdalene Roberts
STRAWBERRY — Magdalene Roberts, 88, of Strawberry died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
Born April 4, 1921, in Strawberry, she was the daughter of Ephriam and Nettie Ann Doyle Norman. She was a homemaker and taught school at the Rosebud one-room school near Cord for 14 years and was a substitute teacher at Strawberry Schools for many years.
She was an active member of Jerusalem Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Strawberry for 72 years, where she served as church clerk for 32 years and Sunday school teacher for many years. -
Teen arrested for theft, giving beer to minors
A night of alleged partying with minors, breaking into cars and taking drugs has a Kyler Road teen in trouble with the law, according to Independence County Sheriff’s Investigator Robert Moser.
In a circuit court affidavit Moser said he was called to Kennedy Park south of the White River around 6 a.m. June 11 where a teenage boy had apparently overdosed on drugs that may have been stolen from a vehicle. -
Jacksonport State Park to host day camp
JACKSONPORT — Jacksonport State Park will host the Summer Science Day Camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 24-26 at the park pavilion.
Children ages 6 to 12 will find explore the outdoors through games and activities, such as a Butterfly Hike, fishing clinic with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and designing camp T-shirts.
The fee for day camp is $15 per child which includes a camp T-shirt. The fee is used to help pay the cost of materials used in the activities. -
Tatting workshop set
POWHATAN — “Lace, Loops and Laughter: A Beginner’s Tatting Workshop” will be taught from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11 at Powhatan Historic State Park, according to park interpreter Kristyn Watts.
The registration fee is $15 per person.
“Tatting, a very old form of lace-making, reached its peak during Victorian times,” Watts said. “Learn how to make bookmarks, lace collars, doilies and more with the Victorian method of tatting with a tatting shuttle. -

Cave City EHC
CAVE CITY — The Cave City Extension Homemakers Club met on June 15 at the Cave City Community Center. President Judy Breckenridge called the meeting to order and the group sang “Clementine.” “Words To Live By” were read by Evalynn Edgar. Roll Call was “My favorite piece of furniture.” Seven members were present. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were presented and approved.
Plans were made for Cave City Club’s Educational Booth for the Sharp County Fair to be held in July.
