Stories from grandpas
Having written recently about the 1918 flu pandemic and its association with World War I got me to thinking about people who were soldiers in that war.
My wife Wanda’s grandpa, the late John Brock of Alread, was one soldier who came back with a dramatic story. Since he was elderly when I met him, I don’t know for sure but I feel he probably did not tell that story much, or perhaps at all, until just a few years before his death. -

First to graduate
To say Tonya Cheslek had unresolved issues from her childhood might be putting it mildly.
After her parents split up, she excelled at whatever she could find to get the love and attention she didn’t get at home. She rebelled, and like so many others turned to drugs, which eventually led to a vicious cycle of rehab and falling back off the wagon. Then, last year, she was sitting in a Mississippi jail, facing a possible sentence, when her family bonded her out and brought her to the tiny Swaim Hill community, which is now a home to other women who are in similar situations. -
