    Herbert Lee, 98, of Batesville died Saturday, May 9, 2009.
    Born Feb. 13, 1911, in Independence County, he was the son of William Oscar Lee and Mary Elizabeth Smith Lee Means. When he was young he lived around the Gap Road and Sulphur Rock area and enjoyed telling stories about his early life near White River and the Rutherford place. He married Mary Roe Hall on Oct. 3, 1931, in Independence County.

    CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Faerene Bower, 85, of Cherokee Village, formerly of Anaheim, Calif., died Monday, May 11, 2009, at her home.
    Born Nov. 28, 1923, at Memphis, she was the daughter of James and Onie Cleo Miller Chappell. She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper. She enjoyed playing bridge.
    Survivors include her husband, Jack Bower; and two sons, Jim Bower of St. Louis and Mark Bower of Long Beach, Calif.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.
    A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland.

  • Antique store burglarized

    Police are investigating the weekend burglary of a Cord business, according to Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Robbins.
    Robbins said he was dispatched to 8230 Cord Road just before 8 a.m. May 4 where Ye Old Church Gifts and Antiques had been entered by breaking out the bottom half of a wooden front door.
    Store owner Carolyn Austin told Robbins that she closed the business around 5 p.m. May 2 and then got a call from a friend around 7:30 May 4 saying the store had been burglarized.

    Six Lyon College students earned awards for their academic work at Saturday’s 137th commencement.
    The winners are:
    • The Charles H. Coffin Medal (the highest academic award) — Leah Byers of Lexa. Established as a memorial to Dr. Coffin by a former classmate of his at Lyon, the Coffin Scholarship Medal is the highest academic honor bestowed on a graduating senior, and is awarded each year to an honor graduate who has taken his or her last three years of work at the college as a regular student.
