• Prowler held at gunpoint

    After being held at gunpoint in a stranger’s yard until police arrived Wednesday morning, a Batesville man later reportedly told officers that he didn’t know where he was, or what he was doing there, according to the Independence County Sheriff’s Office.
    Billy Joe Brown, who lives at 134 Miller Drive in Spring Valley, told deputies that shortly after midnight he and his wife heard someone knocking on the windows of their home.

  • Divers, dogs join search for boater

    Rescue and recovery divers, specialized cadaver dogs, underwater sonar and even old-fashioned drag lines were employed Wednesday in a futile attempt to find a man believed missing on the White River near Batesville.
    Divers from the Conway Fire Department’s Special Operations unit spent the day searching an area between an ammonia pipeline crossing about 5 miles north of Batesville, and the mouth of Greenbrier Creek a few miles downstream.

  • Report: Washington may return to Hogs

    FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Michael Washington has reportedly decided to pass on the NBA and return to Arkansas for his senior season, although Razorbacks officials indicated Tuesday he has not officially withdrawn his name from the NBA draft.
    Arkansas spokesman Kevin Trainor said the school had no immediate announcement planned, and that any announcement would come only after Washington completed the necessary paperwork to pull his name out of the draft.

  • Paintballers target Chevy dealership

    Thanks to an alert custodian, a local car dealership escaped relatively unscathed from an early morning paintball attack Friday.
    The Stanley Wood Chevrolet dealership, 290 N. Central Ave., came under attack shortly after 2 a.m., according to Independence County Deputy Ben Keener.

    William W. “Bill” Hall, 66, of Batesville died Monday, May 11, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
    Born Dec. 3, 1942, in Runnemede, N.J., he was the son of William H. and Charlotte S. Jones Hall. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Independence County Sheriff’s Office after 20 years of service, where he was a lieutenant and head of the Criminal Investigation Division. He was a past employee of ConAgra and Lyon College, where he worked in the security department.

  • Sharp domestic violence agency receives funds

    ASH FLAT — Spring River Adult/Child Services Inc. has received a $1,000 Giving Tree grant, made possible by the Sharp County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation.
    The funds will be used toward telecommunications.
    Spring River Adult/Child Services is a nonprofit agency that provides services to individuals affected by domestic abuse and/or sexual assault in Sharp and Fulton counties. It is funded by the revenues from the SACS Thrift store, community grants and donations. It receives no state or federal funding at this time.

  • Health system receives funding for free mammography services

    White River Health System has received a $40,972 grant for its program entitled Komen Project, from the Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
    In its third year, the project provides free mammography services (screening, diagnostic and ultrasound) to women in the WRHS service area who are uninsured or underinsured. In addition to free mammography services, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies have been added to the services provided by the Komen Project.
