Branstetter finishes 2nd at Jr. tourney
LITTLE ROCK — Batesville High’s Garth Branstetter finished second to Cabot’s Hunter Smith in the Arkansas State Golf Association Junior Championship event at War Memorial Golf Course recently.
Branstetter, Smith and Drew Comer each fired a 2-under-par 63, but Smith came out on top in the playoff.
Branstetter is a 16-year-old who will be entering his junior year this fall at BHS.
Izard County’s Preston Harmon shot an 8-over 73 and placed 24th. Twenty-seven golfers participated. -
Local students collect medals in state event
Five students from the Gracie Barra Arkansas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Batesville won or finished second in a recent state tournament in Hammond, La.
Cassie Chism won a Lousiana State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gold medal in the women’s blue belt featherweight division. She also collected a silver medal and a bronze medal in other divisions. -
Pioneer goes last mile in a rush, places ninth in Arkansas decathlon
CABOT — Batesville Pioneer Price Holmes made a big move during the second and final day of the Arkansas High School Decathlon here Thursday, grabbing a top 10 finish.
The senior moved up nine places and finished ninth in the annual season-ending event for track and field athletes with 6,070 points.
“Price had a real good second day,” Batesville Coach Kevin Miller said. “He ran a 5:14 in the mile, winning his flight. He finished strong.” -
Shockers enter tourney with Hogs carrying shockingly low win count
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Wichita State has a proud baseball tradition, one that includes a national title, 27 NCAA tournament appearances and seven trips to the College World Series.
The last two years, the Shockers have advanced to a super regional. But as they enter this year’s Norman Regional, they find themselves in an unfamiliar role — that of the underdog. -
Razorback softball coach resigns
FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Jamie Pinkerton has resigned as Arkansas softball coach.
Pinkerton went 130-179 in his five seasons with the Razorbacks. Arkansas went 27-29 this season and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
“At this point in my career, I feel it is time to pursue other opportunities,” Pinkerton said. “I wish Arkansas softball well in the future and will always consider it an honor to have been a part of the Razorback program.” -
All-state player signs with Lyon
Helen Zyjewski, a 5-foot-5 catcher-first baseman from Greenwood, recently signed to play softball for Lyon College, according to a news release.
Zyjewski hit .574 in her senior season at Greenwood High and was a 3-time all-state and a 4-time all-conference player during her career. -
Lady Pioneer named to all-state team
Senior shortstop Wendy Dozier represents Batesville High on the Class 5A All-State roster.
While hitting a team-high .400 batting average, Dozier delivered four doubles, 15 runs batted in and scored 21 runs for the 9-13 Lady Pioneers. -
All-state softballers include 4-time selection
This year’s Arkansas Activities Association all-state softball lists include 10 selections from Guard-circulation area high schools and seven are newcomers.
The returners are Maggie Jo Cooper of Melbourne, Sarah Taylor of Izard County and Raigan Skidmore of Midland.
Skidmore is a 4-time selection to the Class 2A squad. Taylor, a senior, is on the Class 1A roster for the third time and Cooper, a sophomore, is two for two on the same roster. -

Melbourne man graduates, becomes wildlife officer for Craighead County
MAYFLOWER — An Izard County man was among 17 cadets who recently completed over 900 hours of intensive training to become wildlife officers with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
Graduating was Jeffrey “Jeff” Cowan of Melbourne, who will be assigned as a wildlife officer in Craighead County.
The group studied at the H.C. “Red” Morris Training Center east of Mayflower on Lake Conway.
Graduation ceremonies for the 2009 cadet class took place May 21 at the Arkansas State Capitol. -
Karaoke benefit set for July 13
The fifth annual Karaoke For A Cause benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Central Arkansas will be July 13 at Josie’s at the Lockhouse in Batesville.
The event features food, silent and live auctions and two categories of competition: Soloists and group. -
Daniel Brudvig
RUSSELLVILLE — Daniel Melvin Brudvig, 60, of Russellville died Thursday, May 28, 2009, in a Russellville nursing home.
Born Nov. 30, 1948, in Little Falls, Minn., he was the son of Norman Melvin Brudvig and Mildred Teresa Newman Brudvig. He was a retired machinist, having worked for Mahle Engine Components in Russellville. He was of the Catholic faith.
