‘Oklahoma!’ to be performed
The Batesville High School Drama Department will be producing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” at 7 p.m. May 8 and 9 and at 2 p.m. May 10 in the Batesville School Auditorium, formerly known as the middle school auditorium.
With a cast of over 40 students and a cast and crew numbering over 75, this production has taken over three months to arrange, rehearse and build. The production is directed by Batesville High School Oral Communication and Drama teacher Jay Williams and is choreographed by Shani Bufford, owner of Fusion Dance Academy at Eagle Mountain. -
11 students receive award
SOUTHSIDE — Eleven Southside High School students received the Arkansas Student Achievement Award from the Arkansas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (Pre-ACT) Assessment. These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation. ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.

Berniece Spurlock
GRANITE CITY, Ill. — Berniece Spurlock, 85, of Granite City, Ill., died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in a Granite City hospital.
Born April 24, 1924, in Sharp County, she was the daughter of John Wesley and Virgie Johnson Spurlock. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and tending to her flowers. She was a member of Clark Street Church of Christ. -
Doris Byers
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — Doris R. Byers, 87, of Cherokee Village died Monday, April 27, 2009, in a Batesville hospital.
Born March 15, 1922, in Grant County, Ind., she was the daughter of Clester and Zelia Boswell Rybolt. She was an accountant and owned and operated Byers Bookkeeping and Tax Service in Cherokee Village. She was a member of Cherokee Village Business Association. -
Leona Boyd
OPPELO — Leona Pearl Boyd, 90, of Oppelo died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in a Perryville nursing home.
Arrangements will be announced by Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City. -
Program features fishing stories
Three local fishermen will present “Fishing and Tall Tales, Then and Now” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Old Independence Regional Museum, said Ann Rhodes, member of the program committee.
“This program is in keeping with the museum’s exhibit ‘Summer: A Time to Fish, Go Pearling, and Can Food,’” Rhodes said.
“These men are longtime friends and have lifetime memories of fishing in the area’s rivers, lakes and creeks.” -
Fight leads to brother’s arrest
MELBOURNE — A man was arrested Thursday after a fight between himself and his sister at a Melbourne convenience store, according to Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence.
Benjamin Eugene Giefer, 33, of County Road 71, Sage was arrested and taken to jail. He posted a $1,000 bond Saturday.
Lawrence reported several drug- and alcohol-related arrests have been made in the past week.

Area cemeteries to host work days
CUSHMAN — Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association has announced the annual work days will be every Saturday in May.
Families are responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of family plots, according to the association.
Donations for mowing and tree and road maintenance may be mailed to Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 394, Cushman, AR 72526.

4-H Activity Night winners announced
Several Independence County 4-H’ers participated in the count wide 4-H Activity Day event at the Southside Middle School on April 20. The contests were: Tree Identification, Horiculture, and Seed Identification. First place winners from the Activity Day contests will be eligible to compete at the District O’Rama in Jonesboro, in June. Senior contestants will be able to compete at the State O’Rama on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville in July.

Michael and Whitney McGinty and Aidan of Batesville have announced the birth of a daughter and sister at White River Medical Center on April 24, 2009. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 4.3 ounces and has been named Jade Alexandra McGinty.
Grandparents of the child are Scott and Patsy House and Brian and Debbie McCord, all of Batesville, and Bill McGinty of Hoxie.
Great-grandparents are Doris House of Batesville, James and Aileen Kapales of Ravenden Springs, Geneva Keck of Cord and Lawanda McGinty of Pocahontas. -
