Canon provides last words with mouth, softball bat
Abbey Canon provided the last word.
The senior from Rockwall, Texas, was one of the last to speak Saturday morning at the pregame dedication ceremony for the Pipers’ new home softball field, Howard and Mary House Field.
Saturday afternoon, Canon hit the ball over the right-centerfield wall with one out in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game and giving the Pipers a 2-1 victory.
The Ouachita Baptist Lady Tigers won the opener 3-1.
In TranSouth Athletic Conference action Friday in Jackson, Tenn., Union swept Lyon, winning 3-2 in eight innings and 9-1. -
Unheralded Scot seniors deliver headline-worthy hits
The Lyon College Scots maintained their ground in the TranSouth Athletic Conference baseball standings with a 2-1 series win over the Mid-Continent Cougars Friday and Saturday at Scots Field.
Lyon collected a pair of run-ruled victories, 12-1 and 12-2, but lost the middle game 4-3.
In the rubber game Saturday — also the final home game for the Scots — two unheralded seniors collected lasting memories.
First, Josiah Hass drilled his first career home run to get the Scots fired up on Senior Day. -
S-side, Conway Christian split in 4A-3 league soccer
SOUTHSIDE — Southside and Conway Christian split 4A-3 Conference high school soccer matches at Stewart Field on Friday, and the Southerners are waiting to see if it was a season finale.
The visitors took the girls match, winning 4-1.
Alicia Hunter scored for Southside. Alex Burroughs was credited with the assist.
“I thought we played well,” Southside Coach Jason Weaver said. “We just made a couple of mistakes. I think the girls improved greatly over the course of the year.” -
Lady Pioneer track team adds Vilonia crown to list
VILONIA — The Batesville Lady Pioneers won the Vilonia Walmart Classic here Thursday with 142 points, 64 points better than the second-place Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets.
Senior Lizzie Walton led the Lady Pioneers with victories in the triple jump and 400-meter dash. Lady Pioneers scored in 15 events while winning their fifth meet in as many outings. -
Lady Pioneers win 2-1; Pioneers fall in shootout
JONESBORO — Nettleton and Batesville split 5A-East District soccer matches here Friday, and they couldn’t have been much closer.
Sophomore Kali Foreman scored twice in the second half as the Lady Pioneers won 2-1.
The Raiders and Pioneers finished regulation tied at 1. Neither team scored in two 10-minute sudden death overtimes. The Raiders outscored the Pioneers 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout.
Danielle Goodwin and Mildren Garcia assisted Foreman.
It took awhile for the Lady Pioneers to find their rhythm, Batesville Coach Angela Insell said. -
Lady Panthers hold off Lady Pioneers in Cabot
CABOT — A 2-run third inning and the pitching of Cherié Barfield was enough to get the Cabot Lady Panthers by the Batesville Lady Pioneers here Friday in a nonconference high school softball game.
Barfield scattered five hits, walked one batter, hit another and struck out seven in the 2-1 decision.
Batesville pitcher Angela Woods also shined. The junior right-handers gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out one in six innings. -

Cavemen qualify for region tourney
HARRISON — The Cave City Cavemen moved into the 3A 1-East District Tournament semifinals here Saturday with a 6-4 win over the Bergman Panthers.
With that, they also qualified for their eighth straight trip to the regionals.
The Cavemen won it with a 2-run fifth inning. Paden Day reached on an error, Dalton Carpenter singled and stole second, Dalton Bell walked, Day scored on a wild pitch, Garrett McSpadden walked and Jacob Odom was hit by a pitch, forcing in Carpenter. -
Cavewomen add on league tourney title
HARRISON — The Cave City Cavewomen clobbered a couple of 3A 1-East District foes while collecting the district tournament championship here Friday night.
Winners of the regular-season title, the Cavewomen followed up with a 10-0 semifinal win over the Yellville-Summit Lady Panthers and an 11-1 decision over the Flippin Lady Bobcats. Both were run-ruled, 5-inning contests. -
Jeremy Tharp wins debut in late model
LOCUST GROVE — Jeremy Tharp started his late model career in grand fashion Friday night at the Batesville Motor Speedway.
Tharp won the NeSmith Late Models feature event and it was the first night he’d raced in that class. Tharp beat Jason Wilkey, Travis Ashley, Gregg Pectol and Jason Goodman to the finish line. Only five cars participated in the late model division, which is making its return to BMS after a 10-year absence. -
35 new members inducted into UACCB’s PTK chapter
The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, an honor society for students of two-year colleges, inducted 35 new members April 10 during an induction ceremony and installation of officers.
