• Rain shortens ‘Sports calendar’

    Heavy rain Thursday night and the forecast for more of the same has shortened the “Sports calendar.”
    The small school division of the Home Depot Orange Crush Classic has been called off, Batesville Coach Sean Coker announced this morning.
    Also lost to the weather was Cave City’s Xtra Innings Spring Classic baseball game set for today in Valley View, and the Lonoke-at-Batesville varsity and junior varsity baseball games this afternoon.
    The Bradford-at-Southside baseball game set for today was played Thursday.

    The association’s annual spring meeting is set for Sunday afternoon at 1:45 at the Italian Grill.

    Things have changed considerably since the Harding Academy Wildcats won the 1A-4A division of the First Community Bank Pioneer Classic last spring.
    What hasn’t changed — winning — has made the difference. They went on to win the Class 3A State Tournament last spring, and this year’s veteran and talented squad is 8-1.

  • Lady Southerners rack up 17 hits

    SOUTHSIDE — The Southside Lady Southerners put together quite a hit parade while routing the Viola Lady Longhorns 12-5 here Thursday.
    Every Lady Southerner in the starting lineup had at least one hit, K-Leigh Richardson and Haley Mourer totaled three, Miranda Tucker, Sami Hallowell, Brandi Payne and Jordan Hicks added two hits apiece, Payne drove in a team-high five runs, and Lunden Roberts drove in two.
    The Lady Southerners’ record is 4-7.

  • Screamin’ Eagles take road win over ’Horns

    VIOLA — Michael Spain pitched a 3-hitter and Derek Wooten hit a pair of 3-run home runs as the Hillcrest Screamin’ Eagles downed the Viola Longhorns 8-1 in a nonconference high school baseball game here Thursday.
    Spain struck out nine and walked one over seven innings. Spain snuffed out a rally in the sixth when, with runners at second and third, he struck out the next two batters.
    Wooten’s 3-run shots came in the third and seventh. Marcus Huskey added three hits and scored two runs and Jordan Hunter chipped in two hits for 9-2 Hillcrest.

  • Local NWTF chapter celebrates 20th year

    The Independence County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation celebrated its 20th year with a record-setting membership drive and banquet March 7 at Independence Hall on the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, banquet chairman Gary Stroud said.
    “This 15-gun event was the largest, with approximately 300 in attendance,” Stroud said. “Randy Ward with Fred’s Fish House did an excellent job of feeding the record crowd.”

    CAVE CITY — Children at From The Beginning, a Child Health Management Services Clinic and Developmental Preschool, recently participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Trike-A-Thon.
    “Our facility raised $600 to donate,” said registered nurse and site director Annette Townsley.
    Curriculum provided by the hospital was used during the week. Lessons learned included wear your helmet, never ride in the street, be careful near driveways and watch where you’re going.

  • Arrests made in ball park burglary

    Four juveniles have been arrested in a recent break-in at the Batesville Recreation Complex on East Main Street, according to Independence County Sheriff Keith Bowers.
    “The Criminal Investigations Division conducted several interviews Monday and four arrests were made in connection to the burglary,” Bowers said. “Three 16-year-old boys and one 17-year-old boy were taken into custody.
    “They have been charged with one count each of commercial burglary and one count each of theft of property.”

    MOUNTAIN HOME — Larry Wayne Olson, 51, of Mountain Home died Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Mountain Home.
    Born April 11, 1957, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he was the son of Arnold and Mildred Cornell Olson. He worked as an insurance salesman. He had lived in Mountain Home since 1978, moving from Amboy, Minn. He was an active member of his church.
